As of the 2016-2017 school year, Virginia's schools were home to a little over 100,500 English language learners. As of the 2014-2015 school twelvemonth, the almost common 5 languages spoken past ELLs in Virginia were Spanish, Arabic, Vietnamese, Urdu, and Chinese. Virginia is a member of WIDA (Earth-Form Instructional Blueprint and Cess), joining in 2008. WIDA is a consortium of states dedicated to the pattern and implementation of high standards and equitable educational opportunities for English language learners which offers states programming for identifying and annually assessing the English language development of its English learners.

VATESOL is a professional organisation dedicated to promoting professional person development, strengthening didactics, and supporting research opportunities at all levels for teachers and administrators of ESL/EFL/ESOL in Virginia.

Virginia: Seal of Biliteracy

Virginia adopted the Seal of Biliteracy in 2015. The Seal of Biliteracy is an award given by a school, district, or state in recognition of students who have studied and attained proficiency in ii or more languages by high school graduation.
